We developed an assessment of adaptation pathways for Prague city, based on retrospective cost benefit
assessments of the flood control system and prospective adaptation pathways for an urban heat island.
After extensive flooding in 2002, Prague has been investing in a flood control system which should prevent
future flooding leading to economic and cultural damage. We found that the net present value and cost of
the flood control system is 37 million Euros. The flood control system has provided considerable benefits
to Prague citizens. However, future climate scenarios predict a change in the number and intensity of extreme
events such as increasing the risk of flash flooding of rivers and extreme heat waves. Therefore, for a
selected case study, we are developing adaptation pathways’ analyses for lessening the effect of the urban
heat island and heat waves. Using RCP scenarios, we have found several adaptation tipping points where
the adaptation policy should move to different pathways. The urban heat island potential is significantly
increasing under RCP 8.5 and adaptation measures are sufficient only until the year 2033. Our results support
the incorporation of scientific approaches into decision-making in the areas of climate change adaptation
    and disaster risk reduction.
