The study aims to contribute to the understanding of the influence of selected environmental factors in the dynamic of landscape change in the Czech Republic: 1) to detect land use changes between 1986-2013 along altitudinal gradients which are geographically defined by two neighbouring Czech districts (Třebíč and Znojmo), and 2) to test if there is a relationship between the spatial distribution of main changes and selected environmental factors. Satellite Landsat TM/ETM scenes of 1986, 1994, 2002 and 2013 were used to define land cover categories (i.e. arable lands, grasslands, coniferous forest, deciduous forest, mixed forest, urban areas and inland water). The distribution of changes in land-cover was explored along slope gradients, aspect, elevation, topographic wetness index (TWI) and the less-favoured areas (LFA). Only a limited proportion of landscape changes were dependent on environmental factors in the study area. During the observed period 1994-2013 there was a decrease in arable land and an increase of grass-land, mainly in the LFA zone. The terrain’s slope was a dominating factor in causing landscape changes. The influence of TWI values was the most significant in permanent arable land in Znojmo and in the tran-sition of grassland to arable land. There was an increasing trend in annual average temperatures and in the sum of solar radiation in the study area.
