The colour monograph presents a comprehensive review of major findings from both long-term and site-based studies of the Římov and Slapy Reservoirs that are listed in the Czech LTER network. It also provides pilot results of up to now analysis of time series. The up-to-now research has concentrated on understanding of the reservoir ecosystem functioning providing detailed insights into e.g. trophic interactions across aquatic food webs, factors affecting the growth and species composition of plankton and fish communities, reservoir ageing, or changes to climatic and hydraulic conditions and nutrients levels.
Recent evaluation of long-term trends in environmental variables brings evidence that the almost sixty years of monitoring records from the Slapy Reservoir represent a unique chronicle of socio-economic development in the entire South Bohemian region, possibly representing characteristic trends for the whole area of central Europe, and also reflect ongoing changes in climatic conditions. The Slapy Reservoir, which is an intensively used system in the reservoir cascade, and the headwater Římov Reservoir, which is not affected by upstream reservoirs, can serve as two most common examples of reservoir operations.
