The study's aim is to focus attention on the only preserved tragedy of Johann Christian Alois Mickl (1711-1767), the later abbot of the Cistercian Monastery in Vyšší Brod (Altum Vadum, Hohenfurt) in southern Bohemia, and to introduce it to the international circuit of researchers in the field of Neo-Latin drama and theatre. The importance of Mickl's Latin tragedy Magnatum ruina facilis, Mauritius Cappadox, Orientis imperator from 1730 is evident for two reasons: the play is, as will be shown, a quite distinctive contribution in the context of the development of Neo-Latin drama in Western and Central Europe, as it deals with one of the core themes of religious drama of that period – the story of the fall of the third Byzantine Emperor Maurikios.
