Válka proměnila Čechy ve Francii (tj. občany Rakousko-Uherska) v nepřátele Francie. Východiskem ze situace byl vznik české dobrovolnické roty Nazdar v rámci francouzské cizinecké legie. Šéfem Pařížské kolonie byl od počátku roku 1915 malíř F. Kupka. Sochař O. Gutfreund se účastnil „vzpoury“ českých dobrovolníků proti nedůstojným podmínkám v legii. Byl 1916 poslán do koncentračního tábora. Příspěvek porovnává jejich individuální volbu v reakcích na stav provizória.

The war turned the Czechs living in France (i.e the citizens of Austrian-Hungary) into the enemies of France. Formation a Czech volunteer company within the French foreign legion, became a way out of situation. It was the painter František Kupka who was the chief of the Paris colony from the beginning od 1915. The sculptor Otto Gutfreund took part in the „rebelion“ of Czech volunteers against demeaning conditions in the legion. In 1916, he was sent to a concentration camp. The contribution compares their individual choice in reaction to the makeshift arrangement.
