Random motion of water molecules in soft tissues, detected by diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging techniques and quantified most frequently by the apparent diffusion coefficient,
diffusion tensor (DTI) or diffusion kurtosis (DKI) models, turns out to be a useful marker of pathological changes, such as those associated with Parkinson’s disease or stroke, and a useful basis for white-matter neural fiber tractography.
