This poster summarizes the results of an experimental pilot study on the behaviour of masonry walls made of unburned bricks and provided with imperfect plaster layers on both surfaces. Plaster layers made of lime or clay mortars were reinforced by very simple and inexpensive polyethylene nets, or were just filled with fibrous particles - short polyethylene fibres or sawdust. For a comparison, walls without rendering, walls with plain mortar rendering and walls with a high-performance lime-pozzolana plaster were also tested. The tests included vibration loading on a seismic table, modal analysis tests, and also static destructive tests in fourpoint bending of rendered walls. Measurements were also made of the material characteristics of individual structural elements of the wall sandwich. In addition, local detachment of plaster from the masonry wall was carefully detected by means of manual acoustic tracing and thermographic measurements before the tests were performed. The experiments have proved that there is a significant improvement in the load-carrying capacity of walls when they are rendered with reinforced plasters. During the experiments, a substantial increase in the maximum load was observed, and full destruction of the walls was prevented or substantially delayed after they reached their ultimate load and after remarkable crack patterns had developed. Inexpensive and easily applicable retrofitting of adobe walls or unfired clay brick walls can thus improve the seismic behaviour of existing masonry buildings and of newly-built or previously-damaged masonry buildings.
