Before starting fly ash pond reclamation, a preliminary screening of the site and nursery seedlings is a worthwhile step to detect the presence/abundance of mycorrhizal fungi. The potential inoculation should be based on a competent decision. If native fungi are already present, mycorrhizal inoculation may not bring any significant benefit. Conversely, the competition of mycorrhizal groups can even result in negative effects on the trees. Scheduling the inoculation to the beginning of vegetation season might increase the chance of inoculum survival. Unless we are able to specifically trace each fungus at an isolate level, it is difficult to fully appraise the inoculation efficiency due to the possible overlap between the native and the introduced mycorrhizal fungi.
