Miniaturized sample pretreatment techniques have become increasingly popular during last two decades. Advantages such as reduced sample volumes, rapid pretreatment times, low consumption of potentially hazardous chemicals and reduced costs have to a large extent driven this development. A novel microextraction technique, electromembrane extraction (EME), was developed in 2006. Herein, we report on application of the novel multiple-phase extraction system for simultaneous μ-EMEs of acidic and basic drugs and for selective μ-EMEs of basic drugs based on their pKa values from human urine and plasma samples.
