In this paper combination of advanced experimental and numerical methods for micromechanical
and microstructural characterization of natural stones used in historical buildings is
presented. Several different types of porous stones commonly used for construction of built
heritage as well as for restoration purposes were subjected to complex experimental investigation
involving SEM imaging, EDS based identification of chemical composition, nanomechanical
measurement of properties of constituent phase and experimental measurements
of fluid uptake characteristics. Using a combination of image and signal processing techniques
applied on SEM micrographs dimensions of representative volume element of investigated
materials were determined. Real-time X-ray radiography utilizing state-of-the-art
dual source/dual energy setup was used for observation of fluid penetration process in Maastricht
limestone and to develop a detailed voxel model for numerical simulations of investigated
phenomena. Using such methods methodology for description of important factors influencing
sustainability of historical buildings was established.
