This work is focused on combination of flexural testing of a quasi-brittle material with X-ray
imaging methods. X-ray radiography and X-ray tomography were used for identification
of fracture process zone in the material and for analysis of its spatial development during
flexural loading. Specimens of quasi-brittle materials were subjected to three point flexural
tests in custom design loading device and were simultaneously scanned using X-ray radiography.
The tests were divided to several pre-defined loading steps given by measured force-displacement
dependency. Imaging using X-ray planar images was performed during loading
between loading steps. As two-dimensional information is insufficient for relevant analysis
of fracture process zone the loading was interrupted in given steps and X-ray tomography
scans were taken. Reconstructed three dimensional data was used for identification of
fracture process zone in the vicinity of the notch and for visualization of its development
under increasing loading. To conclude, measurement technique of quasi-brittle specimen
was successfully used for reliable identification of fracture process zone and has a potential
for further development.
