Phytotoxicity of acyclic nucleoside phosphonates (ANPs), namely (R)-PMPA, (S)-PMPA, (S)-PMPG, (S)-HPMPO-DAPy, N (6)-cPr-PMEDAP, (S)-HPMPC, PMEDAP, (S)-FPMPA, N (6)-furfuryl-PMEA, (S)-HPMPA, PMEG, (R)-PMPDAP, PMEO-DAPy, (R,S)-2'-CF3-PMEDAP, (R)-8-PMP-8-azaA, and (R)-PMP-3-deazaA, comprising potential antiviral agents against plant DNA viruses, was tested in whole plants of Brassica pekinensis and Solanum lycopersicum cultivated for 6 weeks in vitro on Murashige and Skoog liquid medium containing individual ANPs at concentrations 12.5 and 25 mg/L. Statistical analysis revealed significant reduction (P < 0.05) in fresh weight of B. pekinensis treated with 12.5 mg/L and 25 mg/L of N (6)-cPr-PMEDAP, (S)-HPMPC, PMEDAP, (S)-FPMPA, and PMEG. Similarly, in S. lycopersicum treated with 25 mg/L of ANPs, significant reduction was observed in the cases of (S)-HPMPC, PMEDAP, (S)-FPMPA, PMEG, and (R)-PMP-3-deazaA in comparison with the plants untreated with ANPs. Dry weight of B. pekinensis treated with 12.5 mg/L was significantly reduced by (S)-HPMPC, PMEDAP and PMEG, while 25 mg/L led to significant reduction also by (S)-FPMPA and (R,S)-2'-CF3-PMEDAP. In S. lycopersicum treated with 25 mg/L, significant reduction was observed with (S)-HPMPC, PMEDAP, (S)-FPMPA, PMEG, (R,S)-2'-CF3-PMEDAP, (R)-8-PMP-8-azaA, and (R)-PMP-3-deazaA. We conclude that the identical response of S. lycopersicum and B. pekinensis to (S)-HPMPC, PMEDAP, (S)-FPMPA and PMEG allows some generalization of ANPs' effects on plants and preselection of prospective compounds for testing as to their antiviral activity.
