Sinds het begin van de vorige eeuw tot 1960 is het oppervlak aan heides in Nederland met ca. 95% gedaald. Zowel herstel van de kwaliteit van bestaande heides als ook het vergroten van het oppervlak (goed ontwikkelde) heide binnen het Nederlandse natuurnetwerk en Natura 2000-gebieden zijn daarmee een expliciet beleidsdoel.

Heathland restoration remains an urgent topic as the area of lowland heathland has declined severely in the Atlantic regions of North-West Europe. In the framework of LIFE, NATURA2000 and O+BN a field trial has been set up in the central part of the Dwingelderveld National Park, Drenthe, The Netherlands.
