The basic research of the role of energy reserves in the regulation of the algal cell cycle has been the subject of active research for more than half a century. Recently, interest in the synthesis of energy reserves has been increased due to possible production or over-production of energy source in algal cultures for the purpose of bioethanol production from starch, or bio-diesel production from lipids. Starch and lipids are formed by algal cells as energy reserves indispensable for cell reproduction. They are particularly important for buffering variation in light (energy) supply under natural conditions. The parameters governing the synthesis of energy reserves (starch, lipid and polyphosphates), and the relationship of their synthesis to individual phases and events of the cell cycle will be presented. Under unfavourable environmental or stress condition, many algae either accumulate starch or alter their lipid biosynthetic pathways toward the synthesis and accumulation of neutral lipids mainly in the form of triacylglycerols that are typically stored as cytoplasmic lipid bodies. The algal strains appropriate for overproduction of starch are not usually suitable for overproduciton of lipid and vice versa.
