We have found that pulsed corona discharges that are generated in a coaxial geometry directly in water are able to degrade a wide range of pharmaceutical residues, which are known to be problematic for water purification systems (diclofenac, ibuprofen, 17α-ethinylestradiol, carbamazepine, diatrizoate, diazepam, and trimethoprim). These pharmaceuticals were degraded by 45% - 99% for treatment times between 15 - 66 minutes, depending on the individual compound. Furthermore we studied and distinguished between different reaction pathways using a chemical model system (500 µM phenol) in combination with HPLC-DAD to identify degradation mechanisms. This way we were able to identify the attack by hydroxyl radicals as the main reaction pathway in our system.
