V období mezi polovinou 14. století a počátkem 16. století hrály poutnické cestopisy důležitou roli v prvních literárních počinech cestopisného žánru. Přestože se popis svatých míst přísně respektoval autoritu Bible a systém udělování odpustků, postupně se diskurs těchto textů obohacoval. Tyto tendence jsou patrné na příkladu poutníků z německých zemí a z Čech, kteří popsali svoji návštěvu biblické vsi Betánie.

In the period between the middle of the 14th century and the beginning of the 16th century, the medieval travel accounts from Jerusalem played an important part of the first literary attempts in the genre of the travelogue. Although the description of the holy sites followed the strict rule of respecting the biblical authority and the system of accorded indulgences, the discourse of these texts enriched gradually. These tendencies are shown on several 15th and 16th century accounts written by the pilgrims from Germany and Bohemia and describing the visit to the biblical village of Bethany.
