This chapter seeks to examine the pattern of rise of the Islamic radical
vigilante group Front Pembela Islam, which was formed in the late 1990s.
While it is widely accepted that their activities have increased the
plight of several religious minorities, such as the Shi´i Muslims, the
Ahmadiyah sect and Christians, this text also attempts to explain the
factors behind the support this grouping receives from segments of
Indonesian elites. At the same time, the author also presents
pro-pluralist voices, which call for disbanding of this uncivil group,
this being explored within a larger view of the socio-religious landscape
in contemporary Indonesi
