This collective monograph aims to examine the socio-religio-political
situation in Indonesia and other Muslim-majority countries of Southeast
Asia, such as Malaysia and Brunei Darussalam, which is becoming
increasingly complex. As of late, official and societal pressures have
pushed the mainstream Islamic discourse from moderation towards
unprecedented orthodoxy. In line with this development, this edited volume
seeks not only to cast more light on the general overall process of
Islamization that started more than half a millennium ago, but also aims
to explore - in eight individual chapters - some contemporary forms of
Islam that are mainly positioned on the fringe – outside the mainstream,
such as Islamic graffiti and Islamic vigilantism - thus attempting to
provide a more comprehensive picture of Islam in the region of Maritime
    Southeast Asia
