The main shift in subsistence strategies is associated with dietary changes in Neolithic and subsequent population differentiations as far as the food-production lifestyle concerns. However, we show in this study that the genetic structure of human populations living in the African Sahel corresponds more strongly with ecoregions than to subsistence strategies. Our results thus suggest a possible independent influence of both the dietary habits associated with subsistence modes and the chemical environment associated with climatic zones and biomes on the evolution of NAT2 diversity in sub-Saharan African populations.
