Long-term selection of Japanese quail further deepened the differences between the HG and LG line in the growth pattern during embryonic and early post-hatch period of life. These differences were associated with changes in the egg size and composition. Higher mortality of HG versus LG embryos could be attributed to transient lack of nutrient supply to HG embryos in consequence of their developmental delay.
