Introduction: Habituation is a reduction in the response to a stimulus when it is repeated. It has been proposed that signal stimuli (i.e., those important for the individual) become habituated less and more slowly than nonsignal (nonimportant) stimuli. From the empirical studies follow a negative bias of habituation: that negative events elicit more rapid and/or more prominent emotional responses than neutral or positive. However little is known about differences in habituation of this response toward positive or negative stimuli. Objectives: The objective of this study was to compare subjective evaluation of habituation of affective intensity and affective valence of the reaction to the repeated affective laden stimuli. We hypothesized that habituation toward negative stimuli would be more distinctive than habituation toward positive stimuli. Methods. 65 participants (age range: 18–21 years, 66. 2%F) were recruited from the Charles University in Prague. Participants viewed series of 10 positive and 10 negative pictures from IAPS and also positive and negative 80s color film clips based on the same theme as pictures. After each stimuli sequence participant evaluated how intense and valenced were his or her feelings. Positive and negative sequences of pictures and film clips and were rotated inter participants and each participant was exposed four times to the presentation. Results: From our results follow that while subjective evaluation of intensity of positive and negative stimuli decreased linearly till the third exposition and then increased, subjective evaluation of valence did not show one habituational trend and fluctuated across runs. Results also showed that woman compared to men evaluated negative stimuli as significantly more intense and more negative.
