The aim of the session is to evaluate the role of the Palaiologan dynasty in the rise and fall of the late Byzantine Empire. While the attention naturally focuses on the actions of emperors, who were responsible for major political decisions and for the overall of military and economic strategies, I would like to briefly highlight the role of the Palaiologan empresses and noble women, who often successfully worked to stem political decline, participated on the cultural bloom known as the Palaiologan renaissance and became involved in social issues of their day. In the final part, I would like to suggest how the imperial marital policies limited this role.
