In order to provide a robust overview of knowledge on diversity of cyanobacteria living on natural as well as artificial rock surfaces 180 research publications were inspected. Altogerther 762 unique taxa were reported. The number of reported taxa is more or less equally distributed between coccoid, simple filamentous, and heterocytous taxa. Most of diversity of organisms of interest (401 taxa) is known from Europe because of long research tradition.
