Conflict is ubiquitous in all political systems. While democracies favor peaceful conflict resolution, autocracies are based on coercion and violence. Which socio-political factors play the key roles in the orientation toward aggressiveness or peacefulness in political systems? Our hypothetical model is based on the social proximity/distance hypothesis. Vertical proximity (distance) is indicated by societal equality (or inequality) and horizontal distance by common identity (or divergence). Our model states that vertical and horizontal closeness are instigating variables and the mediating variables include negative and positive freedoms (unfreedoms). The resulting dependent variable is peaceful conflict resolution or its aggressive alternatives. Peaceful conflict resolution is manifested by permissive rule, civility, and civic virtues; aggressiveness is manifested by coercion, oppression, and civil strife.
