A massive methanol poisoning reported in 2012 in the Czech Republic pointed out the need for development of a robust analytical method suitable for rapid methanol poisoning diagnosis. Formate is the major metabolite in methanol poisoning and is primarily responsible for its toxicity. Formate can also serve as a reliable marker of methanol poisoning since formate concentrations in blood can rise to 10-30 mM in case of acute methanol poisoning, which are almost two orders of magnitude higher than the reference range (0-0.4 mM) reported for blood formate in healthy individuals [1,2]. Several approaches based on capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE) have been reported for formate determination in blood samples and for methanol poisoning diagnosis recently [3-6].
