    Adaptation of rats to chronic continuous hypoxia protected their hearts against post-ischemic contractile dysfunction, decreased creatine kinase release and attenuated the depression of mitochondrial respiration and calcium retention capacity. All these beneficial effects were abolished by naloxone. It suggests that the preserved mitochondrial function contributes to the protected cardiac phenotype conferred by chronic hypoxia and points to an important role of opioid receptor activation
