The aim of the study was to ascertain the role of maternal melatonin in entrainment of the fetal circadian clocks. The role of maternal melatonin in the entrainment of fetal circadian clocks has been suggested, but direct evidence was lacking. The data demonstrate that in pregnant rats with suppressed endogenous melatonin levels, application of melatonin affects the fetal clock in the SCN but not in the liver
