Sorghum bicolor L. can be used as an energy crop (a high biomass production) and at the same time it can clean up environment. Its growth on contaminated soil can reduce the pollution through a transfer of the contaminant from soil to harvestable plant parts. However, higher concentrations of metals can cause death of plants or reduce their production. In this study, we dealt with Cd, Pb, and Zn distribution in roots and shoots of S. bicolor and we focused on the temporal sequence of physiological reactions (changes in chlorophylls contents and antioxidative enzymes activities). Our results showed that metals were accumulated primarily in the roots but higher concentrations of the metals in the solution increased their transfer to the shoots. Higher metals concentration in the roots reduced peroxidase activity. Moreover, transfer of metals into the leaves affected chlorophyll a/b ratio.
