Kniha sleduje dosud zcela nezpracované a nezhodnocené téma „patosu“, „afektu“ a „patičnosti“ v českém umění a umělecko-estetickém myšlení první poloviny 40. let 20. století, zejména na texty a osud pozoruhodných, ale dosud zcela opomíjených teoretiků umění Růženy Vackové a Pavla Kropáčka. Uvažování o patosu je zde zároveň rekonstrukcí vztahu mezi estetickým a umělecko-historickým uvažováním o umění, rekonstrukcí afektivně-emocionální zkušenosti s uměním a (est)etickým postojem ve válečných letech, s patosem odboje proti násilí i za cenu utrpení a oběti. Výchozí myšlenkou je existence vztahu mezi utrpením a aktivitou, praxí a patosem, pasivitou a passion jako aktivními silami jednání i uměleckého tvoření. Pozornost se soustředí na napětí mezi patosem intimity a patosem veřejného v poezii Josefa Palivce, Jiřího Ortena, Milady Součkové, Jiřiny Haukové ad., a na výtvarné dílo malířů jako Václav Chad, Václav Hejna, Čestmír Kafka, Vlastimil Beneš, Rudolf Veverka a autorů Skupiny 42 nebo dramatika Václava Renče.

The book follows up the unnoticed and unvalued topic of „pathos“ and „affect“ in the Czech art and artistic-theoretical thinking in the first half of the 40ies in the 20th century. The content is focusing on the remarkable, but mostly forgotten theoretician of art Růžena Vacková and Pavel Kropáček. Thinking about pathos is in this case at the same time a reconstruction of the affective-emotional experience with art and the aesthetic/ethic point of view during the war, with the pathos of resistence to violence, even if it is demanding victims and suffering. The starting thought is the relation between suffering and activity, praxis and pathos, passivity and passion as active forces of act and artistic creation. The focus is on the tension between pathos of intimacy and pathos of the public in the poetry of Josef Palivec, Jiří Orten, Milada Součková, Jiřina Hauková and others and in the art works of the painters Václav Chad, Václav Hejna, Čestmír Kafka, Vlastimil Beneš, Rudolf Veverka and authors of the Skupina 42 or the playwright Václav Renč.
