Kniha organicky propojuje literárněteoretický rámec fikčních světů s tradičním literárněhistorickým konceptem realistické prózy v kontextu české literatury. Teorie fikčních světů už v českém literárněteoretickém prostředí dostatečně zdomácněla, ovšem toto zdomácnění přineslo i jisté nedorozumění, vzniklé nejspíše z terminologické záměny mezi fikčním a fiktivním: tedy že teorie fikčních světů se primárně zabývá světy fiktivními a fantastickými a že ta část literatury, která produkuje světy méně exkluzivní, stojí za hranicí zkoumatelnosti touto teorií. Je zřejmé, že nejlepší odpovědí na takto limitované chápání působnosti teorie fikčních světů je její aplikace na oblast literatury, která produkuje ty „nejméně fiktivní světy“ – na literaturu realistickou a na její nejdůležitější žánr, realistický román. Monografie je rozdělena do tří částí. První část shrnuje obecné úvahy o ustavení konkrétního žánru realistického románu, a to jak v souvislostech obecně uměleckých, tak v konkrétních souvislostech literárněhistorických a poetologických. Všechny představené koncepty a strategie v této části se nějakým způsobem uplatňují ve stěžejním teoretickém návrhu realistického fikčního světa, který je „srdcem“ celé knihy. Druhá část knihy se soustřeďuje na kontext české realistické prózy konce devatenáctého století, nahlížený ve vývojových souvislostech a proměnách české prózy osmnáctého a devatenáctého století. Třetí část je věnována sociálním a socialistickorealistickým fikčním světům, fikčním světům českého psychologického románu a konečně i specifikům fikčních světů českých románů vědecko-fantastických.

This book applies the literary-theoretical framework of fictional worlds to the traditional literary-historical concept of realist prose in the context of Czech literature. The theory of fictional worlds has already been adopted into Czech literary theory, but with a distinct misunderstanding, most likely arising from confusion between the terms “fictional” and “fictitious”: namely, that the theory of fictional worlds is primarily concerned with fictitious and fantastical worlds, and that the sort of literature that produces less extravagant worlds is outside its purview. Obviously, the best response to such a limited understanding of the domain in which the theory of fictional worlds can operate is its application to the type of literature which produces the “least fictional” worlds—that is, realist literature and its most important genre, the realist novel. The book is divided into three parts. The first part provides some general reflections on the establishment of the realist novel as a distinct genre, both in a general artistic context and in a specific literary-historical and poetological one. All of the concepts and strategies presented in this section are applied towards a theoretical proposal which serves as the heart of the entire book: the realist fictional world. The second part of the book focuses on Czech realist prose at the end of the nineteenth century, looking at developments in Czech prose during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The third section is devoted to social and socialist-realist fictional worlds, fictional worlds in the Czech psychological novel, and even the particularities of fictional worlds in Czech science fiction novels.
