In this work, several types of tungsten material were studied, i.e. tungsten prepared by spark plasma sintering (SPS) and by water stabilized plasma spraying (WSP) technique. An intended surface porosity was created in the samples to model hydrogen/helium bubbles. The samples were subjected to thermal and plasma radiation loading. Thermally induced changes in the microstructure as well as hydrogen retention were evaluated. SPS and WSP samples showed distinct behavior. A characteristic behavior was also observed in areas of increased porosity, where decreased thermal conductivity played significant role. The heat load caused local melting and recrystallization that was inhomogeneous in the case of SPS samples. Presence of "pitted" grooves or cracks, suggesting the creation and release of gaseous compounds from the inside of the material was observed at WSP samples. Influence of the structural changes on the material performance will be discussed.
