The article is focused on definition of ‘shrinking regions’ at the example of regions in Central Europe. It discuss practical, methodical and policy issues related to population shrinkage and its measurement. Firstly, a definition of ‘shrinking regions’ at NUTS 3 level in Central Europe is introduced. Secondly, a definition of ‘shrinking regions’ within selected NUTS 3 region is presented. The regional patterns are illustrated by cartographical means showing population change as well as population distribution in spatial units. The article provides a definition of ‘shrinking regions’ which can be used in policy development. It highlights the importance of multi-level perspective by showing the diversity in patterns of shrinkage in regions at various scales.
