The surfaces of biofilm-positive microorganisms are usually covered with biofilm-specific extracellular polysaccharide substances that play a key role in a biofilm formation and function [1,2] The presence of this substance on the surface can affect the physicochemical properties of the bacterial cell, including the cell-surface hydrophobicity and surface charge The differences in the surface charges lead to the different isoelectric points and the different electromigration characteristics of biofilm-positive and biofilm-negative cells For this reason, the use of the capillary electrophoresis, especially capillary isoelectric focusing (CIEF) and capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE) [3,4], appears to be the appropriate method for the detection of biofilm positivity in a particular strain, as well as for the separation of biofilm-positive and biofilm-negative strains.
