The chapter analyses the metaphysical and epistemological aspects of the theory of general concepts of Francisco Suárez (1548-1617). It presents Suárez's conception of the formal and universal unity in the background of the doctrines of John Duns Scotus, the teaching of Peter Fonseca and the Thomistic theory. It pays attention also to the Suarezian theory of abstractive and relational mental operations forming the various kinds of universality, which are the so-called first and second (logical) intentions.
