Potamogeton coloratus is a plant of calcareous waters, which has become critically endangered or vanished in large regions of its range. In the Czech Republic, it was observed in 1977 for the last time and has been classified as an extinct species. A local soil seed bank was used for restoration of its populations in the Czech Republic more than 30 years after its extirpation. Restored pools have also been populated by other endangered macrophyte species.
