A semi-hydroponic experiment involving three levels of nickel in hydroponic solution, and serpentine and non-serpentine isolates of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and populations of a model plant species (Knautia arvensis, Dipsacaceae) revealed considerable negative effects of elevated nickel concentrations on both plant and fungal performance. Plant growth response to nickel was independent of their origin from serpentine versus non-serpentine sites. However, higher nickel tolerance of serpentine plants was indicated by a smaller decline in the concentrations of photosynthetic pigments and restricted root-to-shoot nickel translocation. Inoculation with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi, especially with the non-serpentine isolate, further aggravated nickel toxicity to host plants. Therefore, arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi do not appear to be involved in nickel tolerance of serpentine K. arvensis plants.
