The paper examines the Franciscan missions in China in modern times with the focus on the members of Bohemian Franciscan Province. The beginning of the Catholic missions in China dates to the second half of the 16th century, but the bloom of missions has begun with the participation of new missionaries coming to China since the 1680s. The Chinese Rites controversy in the 17th and 18th centuries was one of the causes, which led to the prohibition of Christianity and the expulsion of Catholic missionaries from China. Nevertheless, some missionaries were active illegally in China, starting in 1724. Among the Franciscan missionaries to China were also four friars from the Czech Crown lands, who worked in China right at the time of illegal missions. They belonged among the important representatives of the Franciscan missions in China, together with their Italian confreres.
