Kniha přináší obraz literárního a kulturního života Prahy mezi dvěma světovými válkami. Výrazně jej spoluutvářela generace mladých autorů, kteří sami sebe – ve shodě s děním v jiných evropských literaturách – chápali jako nositele zásadní změny uměleckého i společenského diskurzu. Výklad je strukturován geograficky, tedy po místech, kde se v sociální interakci rodily představy nových uměleckých směrů (poetismus, artificialismus) či plány na navázání kontaktů se směry etablovanými v zahraničí (dadaismus, surrealismus). Literární průvodce tedy dovoluje nejen nahlédnout do kulturněhistorického místopisu meziválečné Prahy, ale umožňuje sledovat proces ustalování avantgardy ve dvacátých letech dvacátého století. Kulturně-historický výklad jednotlivých hesel autoři ilustrují mikrosondou spojenou s literární osobností, událostí či dílem.

Avant-garde Prague – a literary guide to the metropolis, 1918-1938 is a book that depicts inter-war Prague literary and cultural life, which was formed to a large extent by a generation of young writers who – in tune with what was going on elsewhere in European literature – saw themselves as the authors of fundamental change in artistic and social discourse. This exposition is structured geographically, i.e. based on the places where the ideas behind new artistic movements (e.g. Poetism and Artificialism) arose out of social interactions, as well as plans to forge links with movements established abroad (e.g. Dadaism and Surrealism). This literary guide not only provides an insight into the cultural historical topography of interwar Prague, but it also affords a view of the process whereby the avant-garde became established during the 1920s. The authors illustrate the cultural-historical exposition of individual entries with a micro-survey of the literary figure, event or work in question.
