Under certain conditions, some microalgal species and strains are known to store considerable amounts of intracellular oils (neutral lipids). This review summarizes recent achievements in microalgal oil productivity, and approaches and methods to its enhancement. Future research directions and obstacles in the algal oil field are discussed.
