Summary of the most important information about the cave biota of Slovakia. Overview of the geological structure of Slovakian caves, including the classification of forms and types of karst, and history of biospeleology in Slovakia. Specific emphasis was placed on the characterization of the broad spectrum of cave habitats, systematic overview of individual groups of organisms and brief of knowledge about the origin and composition of subterranean fauna in different karst regions. Finally, the authors discussed the issue about the protection of caves and biological monitoring of the caves.
