The purpose was to investigate the effect of Escherichia coli and Saccharomyces cerevisiae on pre-formed fungal biofilms colonizing a polyamide carrier. 7-day-old biofilms of the ligninolytic fungi Irpex lacteus and Dichomitus squalens growing in a low-nitrogen mineral medium pH 6 were exposed to the bacterium or yeast and their efficiency to decolorize the RBBR dye (150 mg/l) was measured in subsequent decolorization cycles. In control fungal cultures without the bacterium or yeast the decolorization efficiency was 90-100% within about 12 days. Enzyme activities involved in dye degradation were simultaneously monitored. In D. squalens no inhibitory effect of the bacterium was observed in three sequential decolorization cycles whereas in I. lacteus an inhibition up to 20% could be observed in 2nd and 3rd cycles. When the yeast was used as the competing organism, no inhibition of the decolorization by the fungi was observed. No decolorization by bacterium or yeast control cultures was detected. No effect of the bacterium or yeast on the activities of peroxidases and laccase produced by the two fungi was observed. In D. squalens but not I. lacteus RBBR stimulated the synthesis of laccase.
