Needle-less electro-spinning of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) water solution with ultra dispersed diamond powder (UDD) is used as the nucleation treatment for achieving growth of thin NCD films. The growth is realized by standard microwave plasma chemical vapor deposition (CVD) with focused plasma reactor. The morphology and character of deposited film is strongly related to the density of composite nanofiber textile and growth temperature. The low temperature process (430 °C) results in a growth of foam like structure with voids in films. The high temperature process (660 °C) results in growth of well faceted diamond crystals and continuous films with 3D structure. Reactive ion etching of composite nanofiber textile prior to diamond deposition confirmed growth of isolated diamond nanofibers. An optimized fabrication of complex hierarchically structured films is possible by controlling density of fiber net and by optimal density of UDD and fiber diameter.
