The major histocompatibility complex (MHC) is arguably the the most diverse and intensively studied gene of the vertebrate immune system, yet the ecological and evolutionary factors shaping its extraordinary variability across species are poorly understood. This complex serves as an outstanding model for deepening understanding of the natural process promoting adaptive variation in wild populations. Focusing on one of the most diverse groups of vertebrates, we intend to characterize MHC Class II DRB polymorphism across the radiation of Asian and African rodents and, using a comparative approach, identify the main drivers of interspecific MHC variation. In addition, there is currently debate about the processes promoting alleles shared between species. We will consider evidence for the role of selection maintaining alleles across speciation events vs. allelic similarity due to gene convergence.
