ZnO possesses a wide band gap of 3.37 eV and a large exciton binding energy of 60 meV at room temperature. These properties have led to many potential applications of this material such as piezoelectric transducers, ultraviolet light emitters, solar cells and surface acoustic wave devices. All the above applications require reproducible properties of this material such as specified crystal orientation, surface morphology, suitable optical and electrical properties. A substrate and its temperature play an important role in the growth and the resulting quality of the ZnO film. ZnO thin films were grown by Pulsed Laser Deposition (Nd:YAG,λ= 266 nm, τ = 6 ns, ZnO target, oxygen ambient) on Si/nanocrystaline diamond (NCD) substrates, at substrate temperature of 300°C, 450°C, 600°C as well as room temperature. The optical properties were characterised by optical spectroscopy, spectrophotometric measurement and spectral ellipsometry.
