This article analyses the farmers’ market in Brno and its contribution to local sustainable development. Field observations, interviews, content analysis, and a vendor survey reveal the market’s functions and meaning for customers and vendors, and how market activities compare with sustainability policy. While such markets are not de facto eco-friendly, this research shows the potential of emergent, bottom-up activities to transform society-nature relations while improving urban quality of life.
