Eutrophication, followed by the growth of cyanobacteria, brings about serious problems in drinking water treatment, especially when algal organic matter (AOM) is released into water. Several studies focused on the coagulation inhibition caused by AOM, specifically on the effect of AOM on coagulation of hydrophobic particles. Some AOM proteins inhibit coagulation by formation of highly soluble coagulant metal-protein complexes, which increases the coagulant consumption. However, it was suggested that AOM may serve as coagulant aids under specific conditions, similarly to natural polymers used as additional coagulants in the treatment of turbid waters. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of cyanobacterial proteins on coagulation of hydrophobic kaolin particles and to describe the coagulation pathways.
