Adsorption onto granular activated carbon (GAC) is an efficient technique for removal of herbicides from the water. The efficiency depends on the surface area, pore size distribution, pollutant concentration and other factors. Nevertheless, the high micropollutant removal efficiency can be reduced due to a natural organic matter (NOM) present in the water and its competitive adsorption. NOM includes different organic matter – humic substances and algal organic matter (AOM) produced by phytoplankton. Adsorption of the first is extensively described in the literature, unlike the AOM. This study is aimed at the competitive adsorption between herbicides and peptides of COM (Cellular Organic Matter - component of AOM) onto GAC.
