Compared with controls the mild hypertensive subjects with no other risk factors for atherosclerosis had significantly higher levels of intercellular cell adhesion molecule (ICAM-1), von Willebrand factor and endothelin-1. Three-month treatment with quinapril led to a significant decrease of endothelin-1 and only to a trend toward a decrease in the other factors. Therefore, these factors may serve as markers of endothelial damage and ACE inhibitors may have a beneficial effect on endothelial dysfunction.
