Nanofiber scaffolds seeded with rabbit bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) were transferred onto the rabbit cornea, damaged with sodium hydroxide, causing oxidative injury in the cornea. MSCs protected the formation of toxic peroxynitrite in the cornea, lowered apoptotic cell death and decreased matrix metalloproteinase and proinflammatory cytokine production. This resulted in reduced corneal inflammation, neovascularization and significantly accelerated corneal healing. key words (3): corneal oxidative injury, mesenchymal stem cells, nanofiber scaffolds.
