Książka poświęcona jest problematyce wzajemnego zrozumienia między Czechami i Polakami w historii ostatnich dwu stuleci. Jeśli zgodzimy się z tezą, że współczesna historiografia powraca do narracji, to głównym wątkiem jest tutaj przekraczanie ram kulturowych własnego narodu, w tym przypadku czeskiego i polskiego, czy przynajmniej wzbogacanie kultury narodowej poprzez uwzględnianie odmiennego rozwoju historycznego i wypływających z tego systemów wartości. Stosunkowo szerokie ramy chronologiczne oraz tematyczne mogą ułatwić strukturalny ogląd poruszanych zagadnień – m.in. wyodrębnienie czynników ważnych i mało znaczących, zjawisk trwałych i przejściowych lub dostrzeganie różnic wynikających z odmiennego położenia geograficznego. Kto należał do popularyzatorów idei czesko-polskiego zbliżenia – przede wszystkim w dziedzinie kultury – od czasów formowania się nowoczesnych narodów środkowoeuropejskich aż do współczesności? W jakich warunkach ewentualnie dochodziło do przewartościowywania poglądów, które moglibyśmy określić jako czechofilskie i polonofilskie? Czy istniały jakieś zasadnicze różnice w motywacji jednostek i grup po obu stronach granicy narodowej, a jeśli tak, to jaką rolę odgrywały? W jakim stopniu na wzajemne postrzeganie Czechów i Polaków wpływały odmienne cele polityczne czy interesy narodowe, doświadczenia historyczne, stratyfikacja obu wspólnot narodowych lub stosunek do kwestii religijnych? Jakie były możliwości, a także ograniczenia czeskich i polskich „ambasadorów wzajemnego zrozumienia“? Przedkładany wybór studiów i szkiców stanowi jedną z możliwych prób znalezienia bardziej lub mniej zadowalających odpowiedzi na powyższe i inne pytania.

This book is devoted to the problems of mutual understanding between Czechs and Poles in the modern history. If we were to agree with the proposition that contemporary historiography is again returning to narration, then the fundamental story here is transcending the cultural framework of one’s own nation, in this case the Czech and the Polish nations, or at least the enrichment of national cultures through reflection on their divergent historical developments and the value systems stemming from them. A fairly wide chronological and thematic delimitation can then facilitate structured deliberations on the previously-mentioned theme. Among other analyses, we distinguish primary from secondary or less significant factors and enduring and temporary phenomena, as well as discuss perception of the differences given by geographical situation. Who were among the bearers of the idea of Czech-Polish rapprochement – particularly in the cultural domain – from the period of the formation of the modern Central European nations to the present time? Under what conditions did they perhaps come to re-evaluate attitudes that we could describe as Czechophilic or Polonophilic? Did there exist any fundamental differences in the motivation of individuals and groups on both sides of the national borders, and if there were such differences, what role did they play? To what extent was the mutual perception of Czechs and Poles influenced by the not-infrequently divergent national interests or political goals, historical experiences, and stratification of both national communities, or by their relationship to religious questions? In what lay the possibilities and also the limits of Czech and Polish “ambassadors of mutual understanding”? As has already been said, the present selection of studies and articles represents one of many possible attempts at seeking more or less satisfying answers to these and other questions.
